The Red Door
Emeryville, CA
ffff
Musaics’ new performance and recording space, The Red Door, serves as a home for residencies, open rehearsals, artistic collaborations, and the creation of new works. The Red Door is a laboratory where artists can experiment, take risks, exchange ideas, and develop material in an intimate and exploratory setting.
The Red Door also supports the artists who pass through its doors by documenting and amplifying their work. Featured artists receive professional photography, hi-fidelity recordings of their performances, and a press kit designed to provide lasting materials that can support their professional careers beyond the space.
The Setting
Adorned with velvet drapes, Persian rugs, eclectic art and antiques, the space evokes the presence of a bohemian living room; welcoming, whimsical and relaxed, it invites artists and audiences to drift into the depths of their inner worlds as they share in evenings of music, art and conversation.
The Piano
The studio’s crown jewel is a rare 1881 Steinway Centennial D concert grand piano. With only 424 ever made, the Centennial model represents the very first concert grand from Steinway, which would go on to define all future models of the instrument up to the present day.
The character and tone of this piano is completely unique, and despite it’s large stature, it complements strings and other chamber music instruments perfectly in the intimate setting of the space.
The Gear
The space also features a custom-built tube microphone preamplifier and mixer, along with vintage-style ribbon microphones, built to the highest and most authentic standards. This minimalist hi-fidelity recording chain offers a warm, intimate sound that draws inspiration from the classical and jazz recordings of the 1940’s/50’s and tastefully reimagines them in a modern light.
